• A spiritual gift is a special attribute given by the Holy Spirit to every member of the Body of Christ, according to God’s grace, for use within the context of the Body.
Read 1 Corinthians 12:1-11

o Paul’s intent is to remove ignorance about spiritual gifts
o Notice that he is talking to Christians – therefore, it is possible to be a Christian and to be ignorant (unaware) of the gifts of the Spirit.
o Soulish Christianity rather than Spiritual Christianity
• Vs. 2 – error of the Gentiles (pagans) – lead astray
• Vs. 3 – serves as an ‘instead of vs. 2, I want you to understand the things of the Spirit of God!
o Our identity as Christians stems from the Holy Spirit revealing truth.
• Vs. 4 – Serves as an introductory statement concerning Spiritual Gifts:
o Diversity --- division, distribution, distinction
o Gifts – charisma --- a gift of grace
⇒ Gifts of the Spirit denote extraordinary powers that enable Christians to serve the church!
o Yet – there is but ONE SPIRIT
⇒ autos = same
⇒ pneuma = spirit

o Different Administrations = diakonia – services, ministries
o Same (autos) Lord (kurios) = Master, the one to whom someone/thing belongs

o Different Operations = energeo – effects

• Vs. 7 – Manifestations are for the common Good
o Manifestations – showing the gifts in action
o Common Good – to be profitable, expedient, brings together for the good.

God doesn’t give gifts that He doesn’t ‘call’ you to use.
God doesn’t call you to do something without equipping you with the necessary gifts(s) to do it.

• Administration: The special ability to understand clearly the immediate and long-range goals of a particular unit of the Body of Christ and to devise and execute effective plans for the accomplishment of those goals.

• Service: The special ability to identify the unmet needs involved in a task related to God’s work and to make use of available resources to meet those needs and help accomplish the desired goals.

• Exhortation: The special ability to minister words of comfort, consolation, encouragement and counsel to other members of the Body of Christ in such a way that they feel helped and healed.

• Giving: The special ability to contribute their material resources to the work of the Lord with liberality and cheerfulness.
